Principles of Prosperity
As Described in the Bible

Masaharu Taniguchi

1. Where is the Source of Wealth?

To prosper, it is first necessary to know where the source of our wealth is. As long as we view the source of our wealth as finite, we will not be able to manifest it. First, we must know that God is our Father, a deeply loving Father who provides us with all that we need. God is omnipresent; He is wisdom, love, and life that permeates everywhere, as well as the substance of all things. In the Bible Jesus related the parable of the Prodigal Son:
A man had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, "Father, give me the share of the estate that is due me." So the father divided his property. Some days later, this younger son collected all his belongings and went off to a distant land where he squandered his money on dissolute living. After he had spent everything, a great famine broke out in that country and he was in dire need . So he attached himself to a man of property who sent him to his farm to take care of the pigs. He longed to fill his belly with the husks that were fodder for the pigs, but no one made a move to give him anything. Coming to his senses at last, he thought: How many hired hands at my father's place have more than enough to eat, while here I am starving! I will break away and return to my father, and say to him, "Father, I have sinned against God and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son. Treat me like one of your hired hands." With that he set off for home. From a long way off, his father caught sight of him and was deeply moved. He ran out to meet him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. The son said to him, "Father, I have sinned against God and against you; I no longer deserve to be called your son." The father said to his servants: "Quick! Bring out the finest robe and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. Take the fatted calf and kill it. Let us eat and celebrate because this son of mine was dead and has come back to life. He was lost and is found." Then the celebration began. (Luke 15:11-24).
In this parable the father gathered many people to celebrate the return of his son. Here Jesus describes the truth of infinite supply. The father (allegorically described) is God. As long as the son remained with his father, he was provided with an infinite supply of wealth. However, when he collected all his belongings and left, he separated himself, thus becoming alienated from God. Thereafter, he led a life of dissipation and squandered all the property his father had provided him. As a result, when he turned away from God through his willful conduct, he was exiled from the world of infinite supply. It is said that famine broke out at that time. Natural disasters never occur because of happenstance. They happen when the person's mind becomes susceptible to receiving natural calamities. Then, the son remembered his father. In other words, he remembered God. When we are in a quandary, where nothing goes well and calamities come in droves, this is the chemicalization of delusion. Since the path he was taking in his life was not the path that would take him to God, the son faced an impasse, unable to move any further. There was no choice for him but to return to the road that he took originally. God was never punishing him. The "law" had naturally provided him with an impasse, forcing him to return to the path from whence he was able to advance again.

2. First, Return to the Bosom of the Father
The son realized that the path he was taking in his life was in error; therefore, he returned to his father. In other words, he returned to God. Sinners become sinless and the poor become wealthy in an instant when they return to their Father. This is unconditional forgiveness. It is not forgiveness with conditions attached, such as that one must practice this a little more or that he must atone for his sins before being forgiven. No matter how thick the darkness or how long the darkness has continued, when light shines, in an instant the darkness dissipates and becomes brilliant light.
When the son returned, his father said: "Quick! bring the best robe and put it on him." This means that in the kingdom of God none will be in need. The child-of-God man is inherently prosperous.
Christ said: "If this is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you . . ." (Luke 12:28) . God gave man the privilege to wear beautiful apparel. If we do not know of our True Image, we appear to be in poverty. We do not really have the right to be poor. To be poor means that we have concealed our True Image, and this is sin. Through this parable Jesus Christ taught that the reason the prodigal son became poor is that he alienated himself from God. He could not have become poor if he did not become alienated from God and gone on to the distant land. When the son returned to his father or God, he was immediately clothed in beautiful apparel and a ring was put on his finger. Hand symbolizes action. The ring is a symbol of "infinite circulation." All actions will rotate. They are animate and cannot stop. All things will rotate and circulate. In Buddhism, the "power of karma rotates" or "the wheel of Dharma (Buddha's teachings) spins." What it means is that once we perform an act, its energy through our action or the words spoken will rotate and come back to us.

3. Give and You Shall Be Given.
Christ said: "If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles." This is the Truth: "The more you give, the more you will receive." This is infinite circulation as symbolized by the ring. Unless we know the joy of going two miles, we will be losing that part in our life that should be most worthy. If we were to perform only for compensation for the amount of work performed, it would be like a machine working to full capacity without being lubricated with oil. By going two miles instead of one, we will be providing the machinery of man's life with fresh lubricating oil. If we were to work only for the amount of compensation received, this would only be a "commercial act" of buying and selling, and there would not be any human lubricant of love. We shudder at the thought that our entire lifetime may be spent simply performing "commercial acts." In these situations, the wavelength of God's love will never respond. To become in tune with God's love, you must exceed the original extent of your giving, as in going two miles. When giving and receiving are equal and balanced, a waterwheel will not turn. The reason a water turbine turns is that more water power is provided than is needed to turn it. In this manner what has been given will be the motivating power and man's life will rotate. This is the principle of infinite supply taught by Jesus through the parable as exemplified in: "Put a ring on his finger."

4. Touch the Ground and Practice
Next, in this parable, the father orders that sandals be put on his son's feet. The sandal is that part which touches the ground and symbolizes action. We say that "we walk the path"-this is the function of sandals. We receive through our mind inspiration from God. However, it is of no use to us just knowing about this with our intellect. When we read the Holy Bible and other scriptures only with intellectual understanding of the Truth, it will not be effective. When the feet do not touch the ground, then wisdom and faith will simply become an ivory tower. We must walk the path that we are taught to walk. The father in this parable, who provided his son with new footwear, taught that by discarding his old sandals he should practice the new wisdom. "Practice the Truth" is the teaching of Jesus. When we become enlightened that man is a child of God, then we must practice as a child of God would. God only gives. God has no expectation of receiving offerings. Those who usurp the offerings are none other than religious "traders." We must not become religious "traders." As children of God and God's heirs, we must live the life of God. At any rate, we must give more than is demanded of us. If we complied with the demand to "go one mile," that means we have come under the dominion of the person giving the order. Only by going two miles will our life turn from the passive to an active role. We become the master of our life. This is the meaning of the command, "Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet."

5. Do Not See Wealth as Matter
Next, what is the meaning of that part of the parable that says: "Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us have a feast and celebrate." "Fattened calf" symbolizes flesh and matter. This is an essential point in the principle of infinite supply. When we act with our objective set on flesh and matter, we will not be able to partake of and enjoy the spiritual infinite supply. Jesus taught, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness . . . " (Matthew 6:33). He did not say that when we seek material wealth, we will receive material wealth. We must first discard our physical desires. This may sound paradoxical but when we discard our physical desires, we will then receive material wealth in abundance. This is the truth of infinite supply as taught by Jesus Christ through the parable of the Prodigal Son.
